The Stonehouse Cafe
Historic 1920s cobblestone landmark serving weekend brunch, espresso, and patio views across from Lake Washington.
From Tina's Kitfo to Bokara by the Lake, our stretch of Rainier Avenue S is home to lakeside condos, hillside homes, independent restaurants, hobby shops, and daily Route 107 transit riders. Columbia City and Hillman City built a neighborhood culture on Rainierβnow itβs Bryn Mawrβs turn.
Every other mile of Lake Washington shoreline belongs to a city β Seattle, Renton, Bellevue, Kirkland, Kenmore, Lake Forest Park. This one belongs to no city at all. Bryn MawrβSkyway is home to about 18,000 people, a real commercial pocket on Rainier Ave S, and hillside streets of homes looking out over the lake toward Renton β all of it unincorporated King County. The lake's other unincorporated shores were claimed one by one; Juanita and Finn Hill went to Kirkland in 2011. West Hill's voters chose to stay independent in 2012. Forgotten isn't an accident β it's what happens when no city hall answers for you. We intend to be a lot harder to forget.
The Commons is the Bryn Mawr neighborhood's lakefront district β defined by the people who live here, drawn at these edges:
11301 Rainier Ave S β the corridor starts at the Ethiopian coffee house Tina's shares with Winnie's Cafe & Deli.
The condo community where Rainier Ave meets the lake at the Renton line β the last rooftops of the strip.
Out to the Lake Washington shoreline β Bryn Mawr Properties, Lake Washington Beach Mobile Park, Bryn Mawr Beach Mobile Court, and The Lakeshore apartments.
The line stops at 87th Ave S, where the Lakeridge Apartments stand β inside it: the Rainier Ave S strip, Bryn Mawr Plaza, and the corridor's apartments and condos.
An office with no city hall, no budget, and one very committed officeholder.
Dear Citizens,
As your unofficial, self-declared mayor β elected by a landslide in a vote of one (me; the ballot box was a booster box) β I have a few official proclamations:
One. This is the only piece of unincorporated King County on Lake Washington. The cities had their chance in 2012 and we voted no. The lake is ours.
Two. There is no city hall and no mayor’s office. There is a card shop at 11613 Rainier Ave S, and I will hear your concerns between tournament rounds.
Three. Drive slow on Rainier. Wave at your neighbors. Shop the strip before you drive to a big box somewhere else.
Four. My salary is $0, my budget is $0, and my term runs until somebody declares themselves mayor louder than I did.
This corner of the lake is forgotten no longer. Welcome to the Commons.
Signed,
Kristian Suson
Unofficial, Self-Declared Mayor of Bryn Mawr
